Meal is a word of Greek origin, so it is not surprising that in a country with such ancient culinary traditions, food has a significant place in life. This is relaxation and communication, and, of course, enjoying the taste of wonderful dishes. A meal for the Greeks is an opportunity to get together as a family and slowly discuss the latest news. After all, dinner can last several hours. Well, we can recall the ancient Greek symposia - sumptuous feasts on which the fate of peoples was decided and history was made.

Features of Greek cuisine are determined by the geographical location and long history of the country. Greek cooking absorbed the recipes of many peoples - conquerors and conquered, but at the same time did not lose their individuality.

Its main features are simplicity and freshness. The simplicity of cooking and the freshness of vegetables, which are very beloved by the Greeks and are most often used raw in numerous salads and snacks. Artichokes, beans and beans, carrots, tomatoes, but eggplant is most loved, from which they cook the famous casserole - moussaka and various salads. By the way, the Greeks prefer cold dishes, probably affected by the hot climate. And the world famous Greek salad here is called simply rustic.

Of course, one should not forget about olives, and especially about olive oil, without which almost no dish can do. One of the best oils is squeezed in the Peloponnese, in the Kalamata region. Famous Kalamata olives are also grown there. Salads are also seasoned with lemon juice, onions and garlic and basil.

Island Greece is rich in seafood, the local menu must include squids, octopuses, mussels and shrimps, a variety of fish dishes.

The dishes of their meat are dominated by lamb, which is fried on charcoal or made from it delicious meatballs - keftedes.

Greeks are proud of their cheeses. The most famous are soft salty cheese made from feta sheep’s milk and semi-solid kefalotiri. Other known varieties include engraving, cassery, cephalograver, kopanisti, manuri, misifra, anfotyro, telemes, tulumotiri. Yogurt, which is used both as salad dressing and as a dessert with honey and nuts, is also held in high esteem.

So for lovers of delicious food in Greece there is really everything, especially since the Greeks love not only family meals, but also their taverns, restaurants and cafes. By the way, the very first cookbook was written in Greece before our era.
